2010 Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of Rocky View Water Co-op Ltd. was held on April 27, 2010 at the Balzac Community Hall with twenty voting members in attendance. The financial results for the year ended December 31, 2009 were reviewed and reports were presented by the Auditor, the Board Chair, the Treasurer and the General Manager.
Stan Church, Brian Engbers and Bob Steele accepted nomination to continue as Directors and were re-elected by acclamation. The accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP was unanimously re-elected to serve as the Co-op’s Auditor for the current fiscal year.
Some Numbers
From 2005 to 2009, the volume of water supplied by the Co-op to its members and bulk supply customers grew from 674,863 cubic meters to 811,044 cubic meters. This is an increase of 136,181 cubic meters or 20.2%.
During this same period, water supply revenues were up from $551,844 to $1,115,003. Much of this increase of $563,159, or 102.1%, is from water supply to businesses at Balzac pending development of the County’s utility and reflects the fee being charged for a large commitment of Capacity Units.
Also during this same period, total expenses were up from $605,700 to $917,029, an increase of $311,329 or 51.3%. This apparently disproportionate increase in relation to the volume of water supplied is because repair, maintenance, utility and professional fee costs were exceptionally low in 2005.
Treated Water Rate Increases
Modest increases in treated water rates were approved by the Board for implementation effective April 1, 2010. The rate for volumes supplied up to 300 cubic meters quarterly is up from $0.93 to $0.95 per cubic meter. The rate for volumes supplied over 300 cubic meters quarterly is up from $1.86 to $1.90. This is the first rate adjustment in more than two years.
In the Good Old Summer Time
Summer appears to have arrived after a few false starts and we are told it will be warm and dry. Our peak period of water use will occur during this summer period of the next three months. We agree that it is much too short but we nevertheless urge you to follow good practices when you are irrigating your lawns and gardens.
Here’s a checklist of good practices that will help:
- Fix or replace leaky hoses and hose connections;
- Equip hoses with automatic shutoff nozzles;
- Adjust hose attachments and sprinklers to emit large drops rather than fine spray;
- Use a sprinkler timer to avoid over watering;
- Position sprinklers to avoid watering driveways and sidewalks;
- Reduce usage up to one-third by hand watering as much as possible;
- Water at the coolest time of the day to reduce evaporation; and
- Avoid watering in windy conditions to reduce evaporation.
We all win if we all follow these sensible guidelines.
